Crowd Sourced

Citizen Journalism is all the rage.  These sites rely on the average public citizen for their insight, investigations and inquiries.  True DeweyAh-hem.  Every uncle, daughter and goat-herder seems to be launching a crowd-sourced media site - with BBC, CNN, and others in tow.

Many sources have already been compiled by others:

A list of citizen journalism sites that I like:

  • American News Project - original video reports and crowdsourced reports- from the tides center.
  • Oh My News - Originally launched in South Korea, this online newspaper has grown to cover international issues.
  • Spot.US - They hope to create a new financial model for investigative "Crowd-Funded" reporting.  We need it.
  • Wikileaks - an open approach to whistle blowing.
  • Current TV - online television station allowing consumers to create content.  A novel idea.
  • Global Voices - International network of bloggers and reporters seeking to increase and support diversity within news media.  A great international coalition here.
  • Indy Media - The usual progressive tinfoil hat-crowns aside, this site does provide for some great citizen reporting and uncovering stories that would otherwise go unnoticed.
  • Live Leak - Video site with nearly uncensored content. Enough said.
  • All Voices - Another well put together example of how citizen journalism can be done while adhering to interoperability standards, API development capabilities, and aesthetic beauty.
  • Newscred - Site allowing visitors to rank news stories and sources by their credibility.  Great idea.
  • Knight Citizen News Network - A portal intended for independent reporters.
  • NowPublic - Another basic citizen sourced news site.  The creators of "Truemors."
  • New Voices - Another basic citizen sourced news site . . .
  • Demotix - "Think of it like Flickr or YouTube, but only for original photo/video news."
  • Peace Channel - A combination of crowd-sourced videos and 'impartial' vids from their editorial team.  Focuses on ongoing conflicts around the world.
